Taste of Home Field Editor, Sue Stetzel, shares one of her Sunday traditions.
And if it’s Shining on Sunday….I’ll bring dinner and we’ll make it a picnic!
Having horses is an absolute joy. There’s just something so spiritual about the beauty of a horse. I’ve had the blessing to have been around them my whole life and even now, when my hands are all dirty and horse smelling I hold them up to my face, close my eyes and breath in a smell that I’m certain has to be close to heaven. I know, I know – very odd but hey? I never claimed to be normal right?
Now I love my girls but face it – they love to eat! Fortunately for them – my Mr. has a secret farming fettish. I swear nothing makes that man happier than riding around & around in circles on a tractor. I suppose he could have worse hobbies and this one puts up enough hay to feed the girls all year.
Good hay requires a few days of good sunshine and inevitably we’ll find ourselves baling hay on a Sunday. Now I’m a traditionalist at heart. I love a good Sunday meal with all the kids around. During hay season I have to be a little creative if I want that to happen, so I make a picnic, pack up the lawn chairs and cooler and take dinner to them! You’d be surprised – a hay wagon makes a pretty good table in a pinch.
They’re not a fussy bunch and generally by dinner time on a hay day (not to be confused with a heyday) they’re willing to eat anything I put in front of them. Fortunately for my family, I love them and want them to be happy (and I usually eat whatever I feed them, so I want it to be good). I make a great pasta salad filled with fresh cucumbers, tomatoes and shredded carrots topped off with a nice parmesan Italian dressing and healthy dose of feta cheese to make it pop with flavor. A portable grill makes hamburgers and hot dogs a breeze, and a cooler full of ice cold drinks makes the meal complete.
There’s something incredibly satisfying about seeing my family all together enjoying a meal. With our busy lives, it just doesn’t happen as often as I’d like anymore. These are special moments that we’ll remember and it’s the food that links us all together. I encourage you to take the time to enjoy a Sunday meal with your family, no matter how big or how small. Even coffee and donuts can bring you all together. Try it – you’ll like it! Trust me.
